Speaker spotlight: Ted Nolan on embracing diversity and making a difference
Ted Nolan, former hockey player and NHL coach of the year, is a Sault Ste. Marie legend. Born into the nearby Garden River First Nation, Ted is renowned for his exceptional contributions as a player and a coach, and now as an author, philanthropist, and motivational speaker.
Demonstrating his prowess on the ice at a young age, Ted was recruited to play with the Detroit Red Winds and later the Pittsburgh Penguins. After his career as a hockey player was cut short by an injury, Ted transitioned seamlessly into coaching, including stints with the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Islanders where he received the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year.
Today, Ted Nolan continues to inspire and influence, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience as a sought-after keynote speaker and serving as a positive role model for First Nations people across Canada. His book, “Life in Two Worlds: A Coach’s Journey from the Reserve to the NHL and Back,” was published in October 2023.
